CHAPTER TEN: A Family Destroyed

Adam

There are so many tragedies in this story. I find it hard to just focus on one thing when so many other thoughts are coming to mind.

I know every family has struggles, devastation, hurt feelings, trust issues, and more. I know families that have had members steal money from each other. I know families that have kids with drug problems. I know families that have to deal with sexual abuse. I know families who have to deal with constant lying. I know families that have spouses and kids with cancer and other deadly diseases. I know families that have severely handicapped children or spouses.

As you read this, you probably either know a family that has to deal with something similar or live in one yourself. You are who this book is written for.

I hope and pray that when you start dealing with surprises in your family, you can keep an open mind and heart. It is so easy to just accept or believe a loved one without looking at the whole picture. Don't ever cut anyone off without investigating everything, even if it seems ridiculous at the time. Don't just take family members’ word if it feels off. Don't ever get caught thinking I'm not even going to entertain that possibility. Being cut off is one of the most isolating things you can experience, especially when it’s for something you know is right but everyone else is insisting is wrong. The bottom line is check for yourself when claims are made about a family member. Even if those claims end up being true, isn’t it better to do your own due diligence to determine that for yourself rather than just hope the other voices in your family are correct? If you don’t, and the other voices are wrong, you’ll be casting out someone whose only crime was to be brave enough to speak out about something.

I should know; it’s exactly what happened to me.

As I said before, our family was far from perfect. But from what some have said during and after the deaths of Tylee and J.J., you’d think we were a pack of monsters. As I have read, heard, and seen, countless so-called family members have written books, started podcasts about this case, and commented about our family. That includes cousins who were hardly ever around and knew nothing of our family, to sisters-in-law that spent barely any time around us at all. At best, they’ve gotten some very key details very wrong. At worst, they’ve tried to cash in on this case all while accusing others of the same thing.

So that’s one thing you should learn from this: don't believe everything you read or hear on the internet. I've been in the media – through radio – for 30 years, and there is just so much deception. The media is chewed gum stuck on the bottom of the truth shoe. The best way to get the truth of a story is to take the emotion out of it.
